GERMANY: Exhibition Nordheim – Talstraße 31/1 – Nordheimer Scheune – Mein Tagebuch heißt Himmel – PHILIPP HAAGER

Exhibition:  „Mein Tagebuch heißt Himmel“  –  PHILIPP HAAGER

From 19th October till 30th November 2024 the fascinating artworks of PHILIPP HAAGER could be admired in the exhibition “Mein Tagebuch heißt Himmel” in the NORDHEIMER SCHEUNE. The title would mean in English „My diary is called heaven“. In this article you will see several of the interesting creations from the exhibition in Nordheim, which is a beautiful village located between the cities Heilbronn and Stuttgart.

Curator HELMUT ALBERT MÜLLER about the exhibition: PHILIPP HAAGER, who was born in Stuttgart in 1974 and now lives in Ditzingen, decided to focus on abstract groups of works on the microcosm and macrocosm after his early figurative landscapes without a sky created in 2002. From 2008, he imagined the near field of electromagnetic waves in his Nearfield Paintings, created in elaborate glaze painting. Parallel to this, he created his Bonsai Paintings, which anticipate and incorporate the large formats.

Haager’s Deep Field Nebula Paintings, begun in 2015, rethink the part of the night sky captured by the Hubble Space Telescope and called the Hubble Deep Field, which allows the study of the development of galaxies in the early universe. For this group of works, Haager did not climb onto the roof like Ignatius of Loyola in Rome to receive solace from observing the stars and the sky. Nor did he need a telescope.

His large-format canvases do not depict images received from the retina, „but a correlate of what occurs behind the retina, a long-term exposure of the inner eye. Haager tracks down particles of light and records traces of light. Similar to the nebulae of distant galaxies, areas created by scattered light emerge. Blurriness dominates here, the limit value of the concrete dissolves in a repetitive process of continuous fractalization“ (Hansjörg Fröhlich).

With his Dome Paintings, Haager 2020 returns to earth and at the same time goes beyond it. They owe their name and shape to the vaults, known as domes or cupolas, above circular or angular ground plans of sacred buildings such as St. Blasius Cathedral in the Black Forest, the Zwiefalter Minster „Unserer lieben Frau“ or the Neumünster in Würzburg. Haager’s Dome Paintings open upwards like the vaults of churches and cathedrals and, like the canopies in Corpus Christi processions, become governors of heaven on earth. However, the otherwise central center of the painting remains empty and white.  –  Curator Helmut Albert Müller
